Cascarino slams ‘disinterested’ Lucas Paqueta after what he saw live in Brentford v West Ham United

Tony Cascarino slammed Lucas Paqueta for looking “disinterested” for West Ham United in the 1-1 draw against Brentford.

The Hammers salvaged a point at the GTECH Community Stadium on Saturday [29 September] courtesy of a 54th-minute equaliser from Tomas Soucek after Bryan Mbeumo gave the hosts the lead inside the first minute.

Paqueta left the pitch on 76 minutes for Crysencio Summerville after making little impact and Cascarino – who was in attendance for the fixture – scathed the Brazilian live on talkSPORT [29 September, 6:25am] for his demeanour throughout the match.

He said: “I’ll tell you who was really disappointing Paqueta for West Ham. I thought he really didn’t get going and by the way, looked really disinterested.

“I was watching [Julen] Lopetegui as soon as he made two or three really bad passes in the game, Lopetegui looked at him and eventually dragged him off.”

Julen Lopetegui is facing big problems at West Ham United

The phrase “be careful what you wish for” rings true for West Ham United supporters, as big question marks are being raised around Lopetegui only six Premier League matches into his tenure.

A huge summer recruitment drive had Hammers fans expecting a charge for Europe this season but one win from six to start the campaign has dampened that enthusiasm, while the team look devoid of ideas on the pitch.

Stan Collymore recently stated that Lopetegui is facing pressure to save his job in East London and the wins have to come now with the Irons only two points above 18th-placed Ipswich Town – albeit the season is still in its infancy.

Lopetegui can still salvage the campaign if given time to implement his philosophy at East London and identify his strongest lineup among the current crop of players but both the board and supporters will quickly expect an upturn in fortunes given the amount spent during the summer.

For now, the Spaniard must focus on getting results and the higher he moves the side up the Premier League table the less pressure will be on his shoulders and he can focus on striving for improvement from his side.

With another international break on the horizon, Lopetegui will hope the situation looks a little more positive by the time the bulk of his squad jets out for
