The transfer opportunity Edson Alvarez has now said no to as West Ham future in balance

Edson Alvarez has turned down one transfer possibility but could still be on his way out of West Ham United.

The Mexico international has been used just once by Nuno Espirito Santo so far this season.

That came in West Ham's 3-1 win over Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup, with no Championship appearances to his name so far.

Alvarez was linked with a deadline-day exit at West Ham, but a move away ultimately did not transpire.

However, there is still time for that to change as various other transfer windows remain open.

That includes in his homeland of Mexico, where an emotional homecoming as been touted.

What has Edson Alvarez said to Mexico return?

Alvarez started off his career in Mexico with Club America, where he spent three years and made over 100 appearances.

That came prior to moving to Europe with Ajax in 2019 and then eventually moving on to the London Stadium in 2023.

There has been talk of a possible return to Club America a decade on from his debut there, but that has now been ruled out.

Journalist Ruben Rodriguez told Fox Sports, as per VIP Bola, that Alvarez has said no to a return to Mexico at this point in his career.

That is not to say he wants to stay at West Ham, though, with his future in East London looking as bleak as ever.

Instead, the 28-year-old hopes to find another club in Europe to help revive his career.

Perfect route may have opened up for Alvarez exit

Only some transfer windows remain open on the continent, so Alvarez's options are pretty limited right now.

But teams in Greece are said to be interested in Alvarez, which would definitely tick a few boxes for the midfielder.

He could potentially play top-level European football, but it remains to be seen how much teams in that division are willing to pay.

It is definitely one to keep an eye on over the coming days, even if a Mexico move is off the cards.
