Mateus Fernandes: Jamie Carragher loves West Ham United star who is ‘class apart’ after what he saw

Mateus Fernandes has been singled out for praise by Jamie Carragher at West Ham United.

The Portugal international has been superb in claret and blue since sealing his move from Southampton in the summer.

He has proven to be worth every penny of his initial £38million transfer fee, even with the Hammers battling against relegation.

That continued into this week as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side travelled to face Crystal Palace and played out a goalless draw on Monday.

Fernandes was excellent for West Ham at Selhurst Park and has now been picked out by Carragher for his latest showcase.

The Irons are continuing to battle against the drop and secured one more point in their mission to avoid the drop on Monday.

A 0-0 draw against the Eagles wasn’t a classic, but there were still some positive signs for Nuno to assess moving forward.

It actually turned out to be further proof of just how good Fernandes is for the East London outfit as he shone on a quiet evening for the Hammers.

The midfielder still managed to get on the ball and prove himself in the middle of the park, even if a winner eluded the away side.

That prompted Carragher to pick out the Portuguese talent for a special mention live on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

He said: “He looked a class apart when you looked at West Ham tonight. Him, in terms of getting on the ball, you saw that bit of class. You could see what he was about.”

Fernandes’ value is on the rise at West Ham as he continues to pick up rave reviews from the London Stadium and beyond.
