Freddie Potts transfer agreement will make him better player at West Ham United

Frank McAvennie is buzzing to see West Ham gem Freddie Potts secure a loan move to Championship side Portsmouth.

The Hammers announced on Monday [26 August] that the 20-year-old midfielder has joined Pompey on a season-long loan, jumping up from his League One experience with Wycombe Wanderers last term.

While some fans have been disappointed with the decision, hoping to see him break into Julen Lopetegui’s side this season, McAvennie is excited to see the youngster gain some valuable game time on loan.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I like the boy, I’ve watched him play a few times. He’s a good player but I’m glad he’s going on loan because it’ll give him the experience of playing week in, week out. He’ll come back a better player, that’s for sure.

“He’s one I’d like to keep. Flynn Downes, who went to Southampton last year, was another one that I wanted to see go out on loan but stay with West Ham. Sadly, that didn’t happen.

“But, I’m glad Potts has gone out on loan. His dad played with me, and I think he’s still there with the academy. So, I’ve seen him a few times and he’s a good player. Going on loan will get him experience. The one thing you don’t want to do is keep him and not give him game time.

There is no doubt over Potts’ ability on the pitch, but the new manager will want the youngster to gain some more valuable minutes before becoming a regular figure in the first-team squad.

While he did make 43 appearances in all competitions for the Wanderers last season, nearly lifting the EFL Trophy at Wembley, he must gain some proper experience in the Championship first.

It will be a true challenge for the midfielder, joining a club that are expected to battle against relegation after being promoted from League One last season, and the Hammers will get a front-row seat to his performances.
