Portsmouth are close to finalising a deal to sign Freddie Potts on loan from West Ham, according to Mark McAdam.

The Sky Sports reporter shared the update via his personal X account [26 August] that the 20-year-old midfielder will join Pompey on a season-long loan.

Potts spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Wycombe Wanderers in League One, where he impressed, and is now set to make the step up to the Championship with the newly promoted side.

West Ham United youngster Freddie Potts set for new loan deal

Many fans at the London Stadium may be disappointed to see Potts being sent on another loan move, especially after an impressive 43 appearances for the Wanderers last term.

If David Moyes was still in charge, that may have been a very real possibility, having got to know the midfielder well over the last few seasons, but Julen Lopetegui will need time to understand which academy stars hold the most potential.

The Spaniard has added a plethora of new faces to the squad at the London Stadium, and the likelihood of Potts being handed valuable game time is relatively low for the Hammers.

Therefore, a move to Portsmouth in the Championship, who have opened the season with three hard-earned draws against Leeds United, Luton Town and Middlesbrough, could be huge for his development.

While Marlon Pack and Andre Dozzell seem to have cemented their spots at the base of midfield, manager John Mousinho will not turn down reinforcements, especially not ones with Potts' ability.

The 20-year-old midfield nearly had a piece of silverware to his name during his loan spell at Adams Park, only to lose narrowly to Peterborough in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley.

On this occasion, the Hammers youngster - who has made first-team appearances already - is likely to be thrown into a Championship relegation battle, with Pompey wanting to remain in the division after earning promotion last term.
