Edson Alvarez is once again staring at a future away from West Ham United this summer.

The Mexico international spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Fenerbahce but has now returned to the Hammers.

At the 2026 World Cup, the 28-year-old featured for his national side as England won 3-2 at the Azteca in the last 16.

Alvarez's future is set to be decided soon, with the midfielder looking for a new challenge away from the London Stadium.

FC Koln have emerged as leading contenders for the Mexican ace, with talks between the two clubs already taking place, with a loan-to-buy agreement possibly on the table.

While other teams are looking to sign the former Ajax star from the Irons, the Bundesliga outfit are pushing to secure his services.

How Edson Alvarez has fared since David Moyes departure

Alvarez was one of David Moyes' key players during his time with the Hammers, serving as Declan Rice's successor in the heart of the midfield.

The Mexico international's form took a massive hit after Julen Lopetegui replaced the Scottish manager.

Subsequently, Graham Potter didn't seem to care much for Alvarez and he left the Irons temporarily last summer, and according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plenttenberg on 7 July, West Ham are "100 per cent ready" to sell him, with another loan exit also seen as an option.

Moyes knew what he was getting with the Mexican ace after his successful spell at Ajax and vast experience of international football, but no other manager has been able to bring the best out of him in E20.

Speaking to the club website after Alvarez's signing, the Scottish head coach said, "The midfield area was one we were especially keen to strengthen this summer, and Edson will complement the other options we have in that department.

"He's an experienced international player, who has enjoyed great success for both club and country during his career to date."

How Nuno Espirito Santo's midfield is shaping up at West Ham

West Ham sold Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham Hotspur for £85million as the future of several big-name players at the London Stadium remains uncertain after Premier League relegation.

The Portuguese star's departure arguably leaves the Hammers lacking creativity in the engine room, with the likes of Tomas Soucek, Freddie Potts, Soungoutou Magassa and Mohamadou Kante among the other options.

James Ward-Prowse has returned to the Irons from his loan spell at Burnley, but it's hard to see Nuno Espirito Santo reintegrating him into his plans.

Alvarez's sale wouldn't come as a surprise, but the East London outfit clearly need to add some quality to their engine room soon.
