West Ham United want to sign Ajax star Steven Bergwijn after financial twist
West Ham United want to sign Ajax star Steven Bergwijn and bring him back to the Premier League, according to Duncan Castles.
Writing on his personal X account (20 June), the journalist reports that the Hammers are one of several clubs interested in signing the Netherlands international this summer.
The Eredivisie giants need to raise funds in the market and the 26-year-old former Tottenham winger is one of the club’s biggest assets, making him a prime candidate for a transfer this summer.
West Ham United need new attacking options this summer
The attacking department of the West Ham squad looks increasingly weaker as the summer window progresses, and that means incoming signings are more likely.
The club have already added Luis Guilherme to the squad but after losing Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma in January, plus Divin Mubama leaving at the end of his contract and interest in Michail Antonio [Athletic, 15 May] and Danny Ings [talkSPORT, 28 May] more is needed.
That’s where Bergwijn could come in, with his ability to play on the wings, as a number ten and also even as a central striker if needed.
Bergwijn didn’t have the greatest of times at Tottenham under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte but his quality is clear, and he would be a great addition to the Hammers squad.
A price has not been mentioned but with Ajax needing to sell to raise funds it’s unlikely to be too expensive and Tim Steidten could reintroduce himself after deals for Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus last summer to get this one done quickly.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to sign a £25m striker with 52 goals in the last two seasons.
