West Ham United in advanced talks to sign Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd, could be done deal within days

West Ham are in advanced talks to complete a deal for Rennes and Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper reported on their website on 25 May that David Moyes has turned his attention towards signing the left-footed centre-back, 26, after pulling out of the race for Burnley’s James Tarkowski.

It is understood that Aguerd is valued at around £25million by Rennes and the Irons hope to wrap up a deal to sign him within the coming days.

Closing in

Moyes has no choice but to add to his squad this summer.

West Ham should have done more to bolster their team last summer while the fact they didn’t sign anyone in January was a complete and utter mess-up.

Moyes’ defence has been down to the bare bones in the second half of this season with Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna all getting injured at various points.

Aguerd has had a couple of injury issues this season with Ligue 1 side Rennes but they haven’t been anything that have kept him out of more than one match at a time.

He seems like a consistent and reliable defender who should be able to do a decent job at the London Stadium.

He’s left-footed and is able to move over to the left-back role, while Moyes could also opt to play him on the left-hand side of a back-three or to the left of Craig Dawson in a flat back-four.

Signing him makes a lot of sense and getting a deal done as soon as possible is vastly important.

How many times have we seen the Hammers drag out negotiations and end up being left to panic-buy and spend massive fees late in a transfer window?

Get the bulk of the business done by mid-July and we’ll be more than happy.

Fortunately, it seems as though a deal for Aguerd could be completed sharpish.
