West Ham United cool interest in Ian Maatsen, Aaron Cresswell set to stay

West Ham are expecting Aaron Cresswell to stay at the club beyond the transfer deadline, with their interest in Ian Maatsen cooling reports Nizaar Kinsella.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (1 September), the Evening Standard journalist reports that the Hammers are no longer pursuing the Dutch youth international as veteran defender Cresswell is no longer expected to leave.

Maatsen is now set to join Burnley on loan with an obligation to buy according to The Telegraph, putting an end to that rumour completely.

“West Ham’s interest in Maatsen has cooled now Aaron Cresswell is expected to stay,” he wrote.

Shame

Cresswell is a very popular figure at the London Stadium and seeing him leave isn’t something the club would have been planning for before the window opened.

But once interest from Wolves emerged the club should have looked to sell him considering his age, the options we have in that position and the fact that he is in the final year of his deal.

He was looking to leave the club and even stopped training, but a deal couldn’t be agreed and then when they changed managers the interest disappeared completely.

Bringin in Maatsen would’ve been shrewd as he showed great quality in the Championship last season with Burnley and has a very bright future considering his age.

But it wasn’t to be, and we know that we’ll get committed performances every week from Cresswell while he’s here. Fans can forget about that new signing now and probably start to focus on the game against Luton instead.
