West Ham ready Callum Wilson transfer as new weighted contract on cards

Callum Wilson could be set to make the move to West Ham over the summer.

Wilson has been one of the best strikers in the Premier League in recent years when fit, and if the Hammers were bringing him to E20 five years ago, it would have been a phenomenal piece of business.

Niclas Fullkrug is the latest in a long list of strikers to struggle at West Ham in recent years, with Graham Potter in need of a reliable goal scorer to play alongside Jarrod Bowen next season.

Whether Wilson, 33, is still able to contribute regularly in the Premier League remains to be seen, but West Ham appear to be willing to take that risk.

West Ham in talks with Wilson over potential deal

Luka Jovic is another free agent striker that the Irons have been linked with recently, with the Serbian attracting interest from multiple clubs in Spain.

Whilst signing Wilson would be a risk, at least he is proven to be able to score in the Premier League, unlike Jovic, who has also failed to net more than six league goals since the 2018/19 season.

According to Jack Rosser on X (22 July), West Ham are now in fresh talks over a deal for the former England international.

The former Bournemouth and Newcastle striker has long had admirers at the club, but any contract is likely to be weighted towards appearances and goals.

It is also said that other options up top are also being considered.

Wilson struggled with injuries last season.

With Potter’s job on the line if the Hammers get off to a poor start in the next Premier League campaign, relying on Wilson in 2025 could be a catastrophic mistake for the English manager.

Potter must explore other options in the market

If Wilson is brought in, regardless of whether the deal is weighted to appearances and goal bonuses, the Hammers will only have themselves to blame when he inevitably gets injured.

The years of Wilson netting 18 Premier League goals are firmly in the past, and West Ham should be urgently searching for an alternative.

With Mohammed Kudus moving to Tottenham, Potter cannot afford to weaken his frontline even further by bringing in another underwhelming striker.

As well as the final third, the Irons are also looking to strengthen in midfield, with Douglas Luiz’s potential addition to Potter’s engine room being the sort of business West Ham should be looking to replicate.
