West Ham and Newcastle United want to sign Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos
West Ham are battling Newcastle United in the race to sign Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, according to German news outlet Bild.
The 24-year-old centre-back, currently on loan at Stuttgart from Arsenal, is also high on the shortlist of Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.
Stuttgart have a £2.6million option to sign Mavropanos permanently in the summer of 2022 and could then sell him on for £21.3million.
Mavropanos joined Arsenal in January 2018 from PAS Giannina and has made eight appearances in total for the Gunners, making his Premier League debut against Manchester United (April 2018).
But, after failing to force his way into the side as a regular, he joined Stuttgart on loan for the 2020/21 campaign before it was extended this year, with a permanent option included for 2022.
He has seven caps for Greece and has recently developed a reputation as something of a goalscoring defender with five goals in 15 appearances this season, including four in 13 Bundesliga appearances.
After long-term injuries to Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, West Ham need to sign at least one centre-back in the January transfer window.
Mavropanos, however, seems unlikely to be on the move next month as it would require him to somehow break off his Stuttgart loan deal or for the German side to speed up their permanent option and flip him on in the same window.
As such, given his importance to the Stuttgart side as well, a summer move looks likelier.
Will the Irons still be in need of a centre-back then? It remains to be seen.
In other West Ham news, a journalist claims this Premier League centre-back will snub Newcastle for the Irons in January.
