Manchester City defender Nathan Ake will snub Newcastle United if West Ham make January bid

Nathan Ake would snub the chance to move to Newcastle United in favour of West Ham, according to Eurosport‘s Dean Jones.

Manchester City defender Ake, 25, is a player in demand heading into the January transfer window after making just five Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

Jones wrote via Eurosport on Friday (10 December): “Ake is being explored as a potential (West Ham) signing though and is believed to be keen on the prospect if City show they are open to a transfer. Newcastle are keen to reunite him with his old Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe but given the choice between fighting relegation and challenging for the Champions League places, it’s seen as a no-brainer.”

Jones also broached the subject on Touchline Talk, in a video posted via Oddschanger’s Twitter account on Friday.

He said: “Nathan Ake, we talked about how he was linked to Newcastle, but one of the big concerns for them will be that West Ham are looking for the same type of player at the moment and out of the two, if they were to both go for him, Nathan Ake would be choosing West Ham every day of the week.”

West Ham may be in the market for two central defenders, not just one.

The Irons have been hit with injury blows in consecutive months as Kurt Zouma recently joined Angelo Ogbonna on the sidelines with major injuries.

That leaves just Craig Dawson and Issa Diop as senior central defenders at the London Stadium, with both operating as right-footed centre-backs.

As such, a left-footed player to cover for Ogbonna would be ideal, particularly someone young enough to act as the 33-year-old Italian’s long-term successor.

There’s no telling how Ogbonna will recover from his anterior cruciate ligament injury and the Irons need to prepare for the worst.

Ake has failed to command a regular spot in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI since moving from Bournemouth in 2020, but he still remains a classy centre-back who would fit perfectly at West Ham.

The race is on, but it looks like David Moyes’ side have a headstart over Newcastle.

In other West Ham news, Jack Wilshere hit back at Andy Goldstein as an on-air Irons question was posed on Thursday.
