Sullivan to strike brilliant West Ham agreement after Callum Wilson talks

West Ham are advancing in talks to sign Callum Wilson this summer, with the striker available on a free transfer.

The Hammers need a new striker this summer after both Michail Antonio and Danny Ings left the club upon the expiry of their contracts at the London Stadium.

Wilson has emerged as a serious option for West Ham in recent days, with the 33-year-old having left Newcastle United at the end of last season.

Fans have been unimpressed by the links to the striker, but an emerging element of Wilson’s potential contract could make the deal an easier one to swallow.

West Ham propose an incentive-based deal

West Ham do not appear to be short of spending money this summer.

The departures of several players thought to be on high wages should have freed up some money, and Mohammed Kudus’ £55million move to Tottenham has surely given West Ham a boost on the Profit and Sustainability Rules front.

But Graham Potter is yet to enjoy the fruits, having welcomed just two signings to the London Stadium so far – El Hadji Malick Diouf, who was signed for £19m, and free agent Kyle Walker-Peters.

The move for Wilson has only worked to strengthen fans’ suspicions that owner David Sullivan is penny-pinching.

The 33-year-old has faced several injury issues over the last two years and scored just one goal in all competitions last season for Newcastle.

However, according to Mail Online (25 July), West Ham have thought about that in their negotiations over a potential deal for the forward.

The Hammers are in talks over a fairly low basic salary for Wilson, with most of the money linked to games and goals.

Such a contract would add a very low-risk element to the signing, with the East London club not committed to an expensive agreement, should Wilson’s injury troubles persist.

Wilson deal could make fans reconsider

Given Wilson’s injury problems last season, it is easy to forget the legitimate quality the Englishman has proven in the Premier League. Just two seasons ago, he scored 18 league goals for Newcastle.

The 33-year-old’s experience could also provide a very valuable presence for young striker Callum Marshall.

Whilst West Ham fans will, understandably, take a lot of convincing to get on board with this signing, Wilson’s contract should give some food for thought over the striker’s potential arrival.
