Pep Guardiola confirms Kalvin Phillips medical news at West Ham United after Manchester City exit sanctioned
Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kalvin Phillips is undergoing a medical ahead of a loan move to West Ham but a deal is not done yet.
The England midfielder is set to move to the London Stadium on loan for the rest of the season with an option to buy worth £35m which becomes active in the summer.
And speaking in his press conference (25 January) ahead of Man City’s FA Cup clash with Tottenham on Friday, Guardiola confirmed the move is close but not done yet and admitted he hopes Phillips can play more regularly under David Moyes.
“He travelled yesterday to make medical tests but it’s not completely done,” he said. “Hopefully he can play the minutes he deserves and I couldn’t give to him.
“He’s an exceptional human being.”
Excellent
There are no doubts now, Kalvin Phillips is set to become a Hammers player for the rest of the season.
He has been a long-term target for West Ham and David Moyes over the last few years and was one of the players who was deemed most likely to replace Declan Rice.
But the player wanted to try and make it at the highest level and when it simply didn’t work out, he looked for a way out and the Hammers have been able to get a deal done.
Now Moyes has got a fantastic depth of options in midfield with James Ward-Prowse, Lucas Paqueta, Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez also in that position and Phillips will have a battle on his hands to get regular minutes.
But competition can only be a good thing and the midfielder will no doubt be hungry to make it work with Euro 2024 around the corner, so this is a fantastic signing for the Hammers to push on in the second half of the season.
