Graham Potter turns heads as West Ham plan in Jonathan David transfer emerges

Graham Potter has set his sights on signing a new striker in what will be his first summer transfer window as the West Ham United head coach.

The centre-forward position has emerged as an area of concern for West Ham, with Niclas Fullkrug, Michail Antonio and Danny Ings scoring just four goals between them this season.

While Evan Ferguson was roped in on loan from Brighton in the winter transfer window with a view to addressing the issue, it has not exactly gone to plan.

The Ireland international is yet to start a game for the Irons despite his experience playing under Potter at Brighton.

Jonathan David is on West Ham agenda

West Ham have no plans to buy Ferguson and will turn their attention towards signing a new number nine instead, with their interest in David no secret.

The Canada international is set to be available on a free transfer this summer as his contract with Lille expires at the end of the season.

And the Hammers have received a boost in their pursuit of the Ligue 1 hitman after his camp was impressed by Potter’s plan for West Ham, according to The i.

This will surely increase West Ham’s hopes of signing David, as he is wanted by at least five other clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea, in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old is also on Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Inter Milan’s radars ahead of the summer, making him ‘Europe’s hottest property’.

A move to Manchester United or Liverpool is already being deemed unlikely, while Chelsea are described as ‘less appealing’ compared to Potter’s side.

Newcastle could plot a move for David to provide backup and competition to Alexander Isak, whereas Spurs may rekindle their interest in the summer after mulling over a move in January.

Potter to lure David to London Stadium

West Ham spent over £120million on new signings last summer, but there is no denying that those transfers left much to be desired.

The Hammers must set that record straight this time, and the signing of David on a free transfer will certainly do them a world of good.

However, luring the Canadian to the London Stadium will not be an easy task, considering the size and number of other clubs interested in acquiring his services.

It is evident that Potter will have a huge role to play if David is to join the East London outfit ahead of next season.
