Fabrizio Romano: West Ham want to sign Jesse Lingard in January as Newcastle United plot move

West Ham still want to re-sign Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard in the January transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Writing for the Guardian website in a post published at 1pm on Monday afternoon (13 December), the Italian journalist claims that the Irons are being rivalled by Newcastle United in the hunt for the 28-year-old’s signature.

Romano said: “Howe is also looking to sign Lingard from United, either on loan or on a permanent deal. The 28-year-old has yet to start a league game this campaign. West Ham, too, are interested in Lingard with the player having had a successful loan spell there for the second part of the 2020-21 season.”

Mapgies move in?

Lingard is still hot property heading into January, despite making just eight Premier League appearances this season, all of which have come from the bench.

Despite a lack of minutes, the England international has still scored twice, including a late winner against the Irons at the London Stadium in September as Manchester United ran out 2-1 winners (19 September).

He failed to feature much under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his chances are unlikely to improve much under new manager Ralf Rangnick.

Lingard was injured for the first game under the German before starting the Red Devils’ Champions League dead-rubber against Young Boys on Wednesday (1-1, 8 December).

However, he was left kicking his heels on the bench on Saturday (11 December) as his side stumbled to a late 1-0 win over Norwich City.

Between Newcastle and West Ham, it appears an easy decision to make for Lingard if both present acceptable offers to Manchester United, given the respective positions in the Premier League table.

However, the Magpies’ newfound wealth could see them offer an irresistible contract to Lingard, and that may be the worry for David Moyes as he looks to bolster his attacking options for the second half of the season and bring back last season’s loan star.

In other West Ham news, a journalist claims this Premier League centre-back will snub Newcastle for the Irons in January.
