Dean Jones: West Ham United really like Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo
West Ham United really like Benfica’s Spanish left-back Alejandro Grimaldo and consider him one of their top targets according to journalist Dean Jones.
It was revealed by ExWHUemployee (4 July, West Ham Way podcast) that Grimaldo is a name that West Ham have looked at but haven’t made a move as of yet.
However, Jones, who has worked for Bleacher Report, believes that the 26-year-old full-back is one of the top names that the Hammers have looked at this summer.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT on Thursday 4 July: “I know they really like Alejandro Grimaldo.
“He was linked to Man City the other day.
“So he’s one of the top names they’ve looked at. But there’ll be others too, as there always is with West Ham. Maybe this is part of the problem.
“They go after too many players at one time and end up with no one.”
If David Moyes does get a deal over the line for 25-year-old Cornet, another left-back may not be needed at the London Stadium.
Aaron Cresswell is certainly entering the latter stages of his career and will need to be adequately replaced next summer, but for the upcoming season, Cresswell and Cornet could be good options for Moyes to utilise on the left.
Cornet can operate in a variety of positions in wide areas, but can also play in a more central role, potentially partnering Gianluca Scamacca or Michail Antonio up front.
Unless West Ham see Grimaldo as a long-term solution for their left-back slot, then a move this summer is probably one that Moyes should look to avoid.
If Cornet joins the Irons, then another centre-back has to be Moyes’ priority after Nayef Aguerd’s preseason injury.
