Andy Irving news away from West Ham United baffles after announcement
Stephen Redside cannot understand how West Ham midfielder Alan Irving has earned a Scotland call-up over Lennon Miller.
The Hammers confirmed the news with the midfielder set to link up with the Scotland national side for the UEFA Nations League ties against Croatia and Portugal.
Redside took to his X account [1 October] to voice his concerns about the international selection with Motherwell midfielder Miller overlooked by Steve Clarke.
The online presenter said: “Picking Andy Irving and Kenny McLean over Lennon Miller is absolutely baffling. Football in this country is broken.”
Alan Irving to reach greater heights at West Ham United
The 24-year-old made the bold decision to stay put in East London this season [Roshane Thomas] and the choice is proving wise as he is slowly building momentum for the Hammers.
He outperformed the more senior duo of Guido Rodriguez and Edson Alvarez during his 18-minute cameo against Chelsea and, certainly produced more of the same against Liverpool with the latter receiving his marching orders for a cynical foul on Mohamed Salah.
All areas of the pitch have become a cause of concern for Lopetegui this season but none more so than the midfield, the Spaniard is still undecided on his preferred partnership in the pivot.
Tomas Soucek is arguably the only nailed-on midfield option at the Irons, the midfield battle has been lost on more than one occasion already this season and Lopetegui must prioritise fixing the glaring problem in his side.
While Irving may not be the most glamourous name to consider, Clarke sees the potential in the Hammers man including him in the side over one of the brightest prospects in Scotland 18-year-old Miller.
Irving has already earned his stripes against two of the best Premier League sides, a start against Ipswich Town on Saturday [5 October] could be a walk in the park and the catalyst for his West Ham career and prepare him for his senior international bow.
