West Ham Women Expert predicts a 2-1 win against Leicester City
We’re delighted to welcome Michelle Irons as our exclusive West Ham Women’s expert. Each week she’ll be giving her views on the biggest talking points at Victoria Road…
Michelle Irons is expecting West Ham Women to win when they host Leicester City on Sunday in their third game of the Women’s Super League campaign.
Olli Harder’s side are looking for their first victory of the new season following a defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on the opening day of the campaign, and a disappointing draw with Aston Villa last time out.
The Foxes are without a win too in 2021-22, losing to Villa and Manchester United in their opening two games of the season.
Both sides will be keen to pick up all three points on Sunday, and Michelle Irons is predicting a narrow victory for the Hammers.
She told West Ham Zone: “I think this will be a good test for us. I really like the Leicester team and set up and I think they were incredibly unlucky in their previous fixtures.
“I’d like to see Hawa Cissoko come back in after her ban and Kate Longhurst possibly starting along with Dagny Brynjarsdottir.
“I think Dagny gives us a real aerial threat and set-piece threat. I’d like to see her score from midfield more. We also need to keep a clean sheet and I hope this has been worked on during training.
“Our forward presence of Adriana Leon and Claudia Walker along with Lisa Evans pushing on is exciting, and we need to take our chances and be more ruthless in attack. I’m looking forward to seeing what Leon can do this weekend as she’s a special player.
“Overall I’d like to see the club really push this fixture to get more fans in, seeing as the men’s team are away this week. We should try and get more fans following the women’s team.
“I’m quietly confident of a win at home but aware that we are vulnerable late on in the game to concede equalisers.
“My prediction is 2-1 home win.”
West Ham have a chance to finally pick up all three points after Villa snatched an equaliser in their last game, and they will fancy their chances against the struggling visitors.
The Ironesses should be doing more given the quality in their squad, and having Cissoko back following her one-game suspension will come as a huge boost.
Harder will be hoping his side can deliver the goods as they would have won their opening two games if things had gone their way, and that could happen against Leicester.
