West Ham want to sign Fenerbahce defender Attila Szalai

West Ham and Newcastle have reportedly shown an interest in securing the services of Fenerbahce defender Attila Szalai in January.

According to Sky Sports, the 23-year-old is also on the radar of Serie A giants AC Milan.

It is believed that the left-footed Hungary international would cost in the region £17million (€20m) and his deal runs out in the summer of 2025.

Worth pursuing

Szalai is a centre-back and left-footed which checks two key boxes for David Moyes and the Hammers this month.

Watching Angelo Ogbonna suffer a season-ending injury would have been devastating for the club as he was their only left-footed central defender.

In Szalai, not only will they get a solution to that problem, they will also acquire someone 10 years younger than the Italian.

This would mean that the Hungarian would go on to Kurt Zouma’s long-term partner at the club.

Right-footed defenders are complimented very well by left-footed ones and it’s hard to argue against a Zouma-Szalai pairing being a successful one in the Premier League.

However, the Hammers need to act quickly as Milan and Newcastle have the ability to tempt the player with higher wages.

The price that’s being mentioned is also not too high and he would fit right into the club’s budget for January.
