West Ham United: Women's expert reacts to first win of 2023

We’re delighted to welcome Michelle Irons as our exclusive West Ham Women expert. Each week she’ll be giving her views on the biggest talking points at Victoria Road

West Ham United Women’s expert Michelle Irons has reacted to the Hammers’ 2-1 victory over Leicester City which was their first WSL win of 2023.

Paul Konchesky left his role as manager on Sunday 28 May after a disappointing second half of the 2023 campaign (BBC Sport, 28 May).

However, the Hammers did manage to pick up a victory before his departure and Irons was pleased with the performance against the Foxes.

“A really good performance from West Ham and exactly the result we were looking for,” Irons exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“We looked confident and despite the late penalty for Leicester we always looked like we would get the three points.

“Leicester had most of the chances but nothing really of note all thanks to a solid defensive display by Arnold, Shimizu and a special mention to Amber Tysiak.

“We are safe from relegation which is a surprise considering how many points we have dropped during 2023.

“I’m looking for us to carry on with this boost and finish as positively as possible.”

It promises to be another big summer at Victoria Road with a new manager now required to build on the Hammers’ eight-place finish.

Chelsea Women sealed yet another league title with a 3-0 win over Reading on the final day of the 2022/23 Women’s Super League season.
