West Ham United news: ‘Huge’ Jarrod Bowen injury update

West Ham United have “huge” concerns over the fitness of Jarrod Bowen after picking up a hip injury, according to the Standard.

The forward picked up the injury in the Hammers’ controversial 2-1 victory at Wolves on 6 April, with the Europa League showdown with Bayer Leverkusen quickly approaching.

David Moyes was quietly positive that Bowen could be passed fit ahead of their match against Leverkusen, but could give no timeframe for goalkeeper Alphonse Areola’s return from a groin strain.

Their 5-0 thumping of Freiburg in the Europa League last 16 suggests West Ham are the side to be feared going into their quarter-final against Leverkusen, but Xabi Alonso’s team have had a flawless season on all fronts and are on the brink of a first-ever Bundesliga title.

West Ham will miss the big-game performances of Bowen, who scored the winner in the 2023 UEFA Conference League final.

Bowen’s output this season for the Hammers has seen him net 19 goals in all competitions. The arrival of Mohammed Kudus has lifted some of the attacking burden off Bowen’s shoulders, but Moyes will see it as a bitter blow if the England international is not available for the first leg.

Leverkusen required two injury-time goals to defeat Qarabag in the last 16, but that means they remain unbeaten in 2023-24. Against a side with such a record, the Irons will need Bowen to be fit, and firing on all cylinders if they’re to stand any chance of reaching the semi-finals.
