West Ham prioritise summer move for Atalanta forward Duvan Zapata

West Ham have reportedly made Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata their number one target in the summer.

According to Italian media outlet Milan Live, the 30-year-old could say goodbye to the Serie A club at the end of the season.

Wise move?

There are three reasons why the Hammers are so desperate to sign another striker as soon as possible.

The lack of goals are telling without a focal point leading the attack and Sebastien Haller has not been replaced despite him leaving over a year ago.

The third thing is that Michail Antonio is 31 years old and extremely injury prone.

So, David Moyes and the Hammers cannot really rely on the Jamaican to be there for 38 weeks in the season.

While Zapata may not be as injury prone, he is also on the wrong side of 30 and that’s not a happy place for a striker to be in.

He may have 149 goals over his illustrious 14-year career but he cannot rest on his laurels.

There is very little upside to signing Zapata if the club are planning for the long term and it may not be wise to waste time and resources over his pursuit.
