West Ham keen to sign Luca Pellegrini

West Ham United are keen to sign Juventus defender Luca Pellegrini who could reportedly leave the club in January.

According to reports from Calciomercato, Serie A outfit Sampdoria are also interested in signing the 22-year-old left-back.

During the summer transfer window, Goal journalist Romeo Agrestri, claimed that the Hammers were keen to sign Pellegrini on loan from Juventus.

The Italian international joined Juventus in 2019 for a reported fee of €22m from AS Roma, but he has made just one appearance for the Old Lady so far.

The young left-back spent loan spells at Cagliari and Genoa in the past couple of seasons, and he is now facing an uncertain future at the club.

He had the opportunity to leave Juve during the summer. The defender was told he won’t cut it for the club’s Champions League squad, but he still stayed on with the hope that his situation might change.

However, after managing only 58 minutes of football thus far, he is open to leaving the club in January, and West Ham and Sampdoria are ready to lure him away.

Smart move

It seems the Hammers will try their luck for Pellegrini once again, but given his lack of games, they should aim to get him at a bargain price.

David Moyes has the likes of Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku as two conventional left-backs in the squad, but the Hammers boss could still look for reinforcement.

Cresswell will turn 32 in December and he has a contract at the club till 2023. It is highly unlikely that he will be given a long-term deal to prolong his stay.

Pellegrini may not have excelled at Juventus, but that doesn’t make him a bad player overnight. The fact that Juventus paid a massive sum to sign him in the first place shows they saw the raw potential in him.

He did well during his loan spells, but now needs a club where he can settle down. Moyes loves to work with young talents, and the Hammers can give him the platform and regular football that he craves at the moment.
