Simon Jordan: West Ham and Noble should be embarrassed after penalty miss v Man Utd
West Ham United have been left to rue missing out on the chance to pick up a point when Manchester United visited on Sunday.
The visitors were leading 2-1 until the dying seconds of the game when the Hammers won a penalty.
Captain Mark Noble came off the bench to take it, but saw his effort saved, and talkSPORT duo Simon Jordan and Jim White insist David Moyes and the midfielder should be embarrassed.
White said (as shared on their official Twitter account on Monday): “It’s embarrassing, it’s a decision that backfired.”
Jordan agreed, replying: “It’s embarrassing for the coaching staff and embarrassing for the player, because the game is turned and defined by that particular moment, and what you’ve done with the decision is increase the advantage to the goalkeeper by bringing someone on that wasn’t in the game.
“When he came on, my first reaction was he is going to miss the penalty. You’re Noble and you’re the penalty taker, you must also be involved in the decision.
“He’s run the full length of the pitch in front of the fans and hit one of the worst penalty kicks in his penalty-taking career at arguably one of the most important times in a meaningful game. It was a really poor penalty.”
Missed point
Man Utd did not deserve to leave with all three points given the performance the Hammers put in, and they were given a huge chance to draw level at the death.
However, Noble missed a penalty kick for the first time in almost five years, and the midfielder is definitely feeling gutted.
Should Moyes have done better and stuck with one of the players on the pitch?
Declan Rice appeared ready to take the ball, while the substituted Jarrod Bowen would have fancied his chances.
Said Benrahma would also have backed himself to score, and had any of those on the field of play missed, there would not have been a lot of fuss after the game.
Moyes and Noble decided bringing on the skipper was the best option, and they are going to get all the blame.
There are no guarantees that the others would have scored, though, and West Ham now have to move on and prepare for their League Cup clash against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
