Lukasz Fabianski verdict emerges at West Ham United after win v Manchester United

Gabby Agbonlahor has named West Ham United’s Lukasz Fabianski in his team of the week but admitted no Premier League keepers “stood out” to him.

The Polish international started his first Premier League games of the season as the Hammers beat Manchester United 2-1 on Sunday (27 October) courtesy of goals from Crysencio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen.

Although talkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor was quick to praise the keeper for his work between the posts, he also admitted he felt the Red Devils’ attack was wasteful in the final third at the London Stadium.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s YouTube channel (28 October) he said: “It was a tough one this weekend, I feel like no keeper really stood out.

“But Fabianski for me, coming in, he hasn’t started for a long time, [Alphonse] Areola was out for this game so to come in and make some very good saves against a very wasteful Manchester United attack, I think Fabianski out of all the keepers probably looked like the best one at the weekend.”

What has happened to West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola at the London Stadium?

It’s safe to say Fabianski’s performance between the posts on Sunday afternoon sent a message to Areola who watched on from the sidelines.

The Frenchman hasn’t been anywhere near his best so far this term, despite establishing himself as one of the division’s better keepers last season and now he will have to work hard to earn his place back in the side.

Fabiasnki may not have youth on his side, but he is as experienced as any other stopper in the Premier League. Yes, United didn’t take their chances when they got through on goal, but the Polish international made some big saves to keep them at arm’s length.

For now, it feels like the number one position is his to lose. Of course, things can change quickly in football and it wouldn’t be a shock to see Areola back in the fold sooner rather than later, but Fabianski has to return his place against Nottingham Forest this weekend.
