Jonathan Bamba would be big gamble for West Ham

After a disappointing January, West Ham are already planning for the summer transfer window, with several players being targeted.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, the Hammers are eyeing a move for Lille striker Jonathan Bamba who is out of contract in 2023.

The Frenchman would cost in the region of £16.6million, and David Moyes must turn attention elsewhere.

The Hammers previously tried to sign the attacker in the summer of 2021, and it’s understandable why Moyes keeps checking on his progress.

Obviously, adding a striker to their ranks is a top priority. But, Moyes wants to add depth in the attacking midfield areas, having tried to sign Raphinha from Leeds during the January window.

Moyes wants to add more pace and power in the final third, and that’s why the Lille attacker, who is desperate to leave the club, is emerging out as an option.

A left-winger by trade, Bamba can play anywhere along the front line. He has got blistering pace and his direct style is suited for the Premier League.

Having said that, his signing would still be a gamble. He has been very poor this season. He has failed to score a goal, and has registered only three assists in 25 games.

His attributes may appeal to Moyes, but the stats do not boost confidence while checking on potential targets. In theory, he would add an extra dimension to the attacking set-up, but spending a big money on a player who has failed to register a single goal hardly makes sense.

A lively forward, no doubt, but he would be a big gamble. Instead, the priority should lie in signing a proven scorer, preferably someone with Premier League experience.
