David Moyes: West Ham will sign a defender this summer

David Moyes has confirmed that West Ham will sign at least a defender this summer after the 4-2 win over Newcastle on Sunday.

The Hammers, despite not fielding any new signings, raced to a victory on the opening day of the season at St. James’ Park.

West Ham have been linked with Nikola Milenkovic this summer, but as things stand their pursuit for the Napoli centre-back appears to have gone cold.

However, without mentioning any names, Moyes stated that there will surely be more arrivals this summer, one of them being a defender.

Football London quoted him as saying, “I have 17-year-old centre-half Jamal Baptiste who I want involved in the first-team training but undoubtedly I am going to try and add to the squad.

“I will be adding a defender and maybe other players as well but then if I don’t then I will be happy if the players perform as well as they did today.”

Good news

Moyes addressing that we need to sign a defender is refreshing, to say the least, but we’re surprised that no such assurances have been made about a striker.

We’ve known for the longest time that we need to sign a striker and it seemed like Tammy Abraham was his nailed-on target.

Now that the move is not going ahead, has he lost confidence in signing someone who’s an upgrade on Michail Antonio?

Antonio may have played well against Newcastle, but we know he won’t stay fit for the entirety of the season and we must bring in someone who’s an upgrade on him.

Hopefully, after a defender, a striker walks through the door at the London Stadium as we need at least two players who would strengthen our playing eleven and so far we’ve got none.
