Chris Sutton in stitches after Edson Alvarez moment in West Ham United loss v Nottingham Forest

Chris Sutton has been left in stitches after what Ian Ladyman told him about Edson Alvarez in West Ham United’s defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Mexican international was sent off as the Hammers were thrashed 3-0 at the City Ground on Saturday (2 November) to increase the pressure on Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium.

While the midfielder has been slammed for his needless fouls in the middle of the park, BBC Sport pundit Sutton could do nothing but laugh when Daily Mail journalist Ladyman revealed Alvarez couldn’t find the tunnel at City Ground.

Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off (4 November, 48:00) he said: “One moment of the weekend, the City Ground, Nottingham Forest put West Ham away comfortably, helped by the fact West Ham went down to 10 men.

“Edson Alvarez the West Ham player sent off and couldn’t find the tunnel. He walked past the tunnel, he obviously thought he was playing at Villa Park or Old Trafford, heading to one of those corner tunnels.

“Which is weird because at West Ham, the tunnel is in the centre, but he walked past the tunnel and then had to come all the way back so he gets dog’s abuse from the fans two times over and his team lose 3-0.

“Something tells me Edson Alvarez will have better days.”

Sutton in stitches could only reply: “Yeah, that is right.”

What has happened to West Ham star Edson Alvarez at the London Stadium?

While it will be hard for Hammers fans to see the funny side of another moment of madness from Alvarez, that incident almost sums up the issues at the London Stadium currently.

The midfielder seems to be completely unaware of his surroundings or the situation that he finds himself in whenever he steps on the football pitch in a claret and blue shirt. He jumps into tackles recklessly and almost always overcommits himself without the ball.

In his first season, those sorts of errors were almost excused because there was an acceptance that it would take time for him to adapt to the Premier League. He has been here well over a year now and he’s not got any better.

Something has to change sooner rather than later or Lopetegui will almost certainly pay with his job. Unfortunately, the Hammers boss doesn’t exactly have a wealth of midfield talent to pick from at this stage.

Hopefully, another suspension will give the Mexican international some time to reflect on his recent performances.
