Callum Wilson relishing Premier League opener against West Ham

West Ham United start the new Premier League season with a trip to Newcastle United on August 15, and Callum Wilson cannot wait.

The England international striker has bagged eight goals in 10 games against the Hammers and been on the losing side just twice.

Wilson says he is eagerly looking forward for 2021-22 to start, with the opener against West Ham an opportunity for him to hit the ground running in the new campaign.

He told The Athletic: “I’ve got eight goals against West Ham, so for me it’s the perfect start to the season, finally in front of our own fans, with my family there.”

Would West Ham’s bogeyman strike again?

A return of eight goals in 10 appearances against a single team is no mean feat, and Wilson is starting to establish himself as our bogeyman.

Not many would bet against the 29-year-old scoring against us again, but hopefully, he does not.

West Ham currently have Issa Diop and Craig Dawson as their only fit centre-backs a fortnight until the start of the new season, and while they are solid defenders, they do not always exude confidence.

Angelo Ogbonna is still nursing an injury after picking up a knock against Celtic a week ago, and the Italian was not able to play the friendly against Brentford on Saturday.

West Ham need to start the new season on a winning note, and while landing a striker would help boost our chances of leaving St. James’ Park with all three points, landing a top centre-back ahead of the opening clash appears to be the most important thing to do right now.

West Ham

Wilson has been a constant nuisance against us, and we need to shut him down.

The Irons have won only away at Newcastle three times since 1998, and that is another jinx we need to break.

David Moyes’ men have been impressive in pre-season, and hopefully, we can take that form into the new season and shut down both Wilson and the Magpies.
