Bent warns potential West Ham signing isn’t a game-changer
West Ham United look to finally be clicking into gear in this transfer window, which is very much needed after a woeful first half of the season.
There are holes at both full back positions, at centre back, central midfield and up front; leaving co-owner David Sullivan with much work to do.
He won’t sort out all of those issues in this window, of course, but if he can fix two or three it will be a solid window.
One of the problems the club seemingly attempted to solve was a lack of quality at right back, with a bid put in for Nottingham Forest ace Matty Cash last week.
However, that’s a signing that former England international Darren Bent doesn’t think will blow the doors off the London Stadium.
“I think he’d be a very good signing but I don’t think he’d be a life-changer, he’s not a game-changer,” he told Football Insider.
“It’s not like he’s someone who’s going to all of a sudden come in and they’re going to start getting results and avoid relegation.
“Matty Cash is a very good player but at the end of the day he [David Moyes] needs to be going out there and signing players who are going to make a difference because they are fourth from bottom.”
What’s Bent on about, here?
It’s hard to say. Yes, recruiting Cash isn’t like bringing in Lionel Messi, but you’ve got to be realistic. The Hammers need a reliable right back, and the Forest man would definitely be that.
Bent is talking about signing players who would make a difference, but wouldn’t a quality, reliable right back make a difference to Moyes’ team?
Cash is a young player who is ready to play now, while he could also improve immensely in the future. Why wouldn’t the Irons want someone like that?
In other West Ham news, the club have reportedly missed out on the signing of a striker from a European giant.
