Alan Shearer drools over West Ham United pair Alphonse Areola and Edson Alvarez

Alan Shearer was left drooling over the performances of Alphonse Areola and Edson Alvarez as West Ham claimed a 3-1 win over Everton at the weekend.

The Hammers claimed all three points in a difficult fixture at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Kurt Zouma, Tomas Soucek and Alvarez, with goalkeeper Areola saving a penalty from Beto too during the first-half.

And while picking his team of the week for the Premier League (5 March), Shearer named the France and Mexico internationals as part of his lineup after how well they performed.

“A superb penalty save, plus eight other stops,” he said. He’s my goalkeeper for the second week running.”

Shearer then moved on to his midfield where he named Edson Alvarez, and stated he could prove to be a bargain signing for the Hammers.

“A really impressive performance, capped off by a deserved late goal. He could prove to be a bargain.”

West Ham squad has consistent performers

The West Ham season has been a rollercoaster so far, with plenty of good results sandwiched between some really poor ones too.

But even in the poor performances there have been some consistently good performances, and both Alvarez and Areola fall into that category alongside Jarrod Bowen and a few others.

Areola has now firmly established himself as the number one goalkeeper ahead of Lukasz Fabianski after spending two years as his understudy despite excellent performances in Europe.

Alan Shearer has been praising West Ham.

As for Alvarez, he was brought in as part of the spending to replace Declan Rice and while he’s not quite as good as the former captain on his own, his performances have made the Hammers midfield unit stronger.

Tim Steidten did a fantastic job of being able to bring him in quickly ahead of competition in the summer, and the club are now seeing the results of some excellent work in the transfer window.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers wanted to sign this “absolutely magnificent” ace in January and he could now be available in the summer.
