Jamie O’Hara blasts Thilo Kehrer for ‘stupid decision’ in West Ham United 2-0 defeat vs Brighton

Sky Sports pundit Jamie O’Hara has blasted West Ham defender Thilo Kehrer for his “stupid decision” which led to a penalty in the defeat to Brighton.

The Hammers suffered a third consecutive league defeat to open the Premier League season when they were beaten 2-0 at the London Stadium, thanks to goals from Alexis MacAllister and Leandro Trossard.

But it was debutant Kehrer’s error in the first-half which gave the Seagulls a penalty to open the scoring, and O’Hara didn’t hide his feelings on the defender’s decision making in the incident while doing punditry live on air.

“He slots it into the bottom corner, 1-0 Brighton,” he said. “And probably deserved.

“A stupid decision from Kehrer to dive in there on Danny Welbeck, gets the penalty and Brighton go 1-0 up.”

Stupid

Stupid might be a bit strong for Kehrer, but the challenge was absolutely needless and ultimately has cost the team points that were much needed.

It’s going to take the German international time to adapt to the way West Ham play and also the way the Premier League is, but that doesn’t mean that we should allow basic errors to be made and not be criticised for it.

He will get better, that much is sure, but it wasn’t good enough today from anyone in the West Ham side and it needs to improve quickly to stop the rot.

That’s now one win in ten Premier League games for the Hammers stretching back to last season and no goals scored in the Premier League after three games.

It’s a shambles and the decision from Kehrer to dive in and concede that penalty was symbolic of the way the team is playing right now.

Frank McAvennie was “brutally honest” when he said players were looking complacent and new faces were needed, so the club must act in the final ten days of the transfer window.
