Pundit calls out West Ham United ace Aaron Cresswell for complacency, tells David Moyes to sign a new left-back

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Aaron Cresswell has become complacent at West Ham and David Moyes should sign a replacement left-back before the deadline, says Frank McAvennie.

The Hammers have been in the market for a new left-back this summer with approaches for the likes of Filip Kostic and most recently Emerson Palmieri of Chelsea, while Cresswell has started both defeats in the Premier League so far this season.

But according to pundit and former striker McAvennie, the veteran defender has become complacent because he isn’t being pushed anymore and believes he will subconsciously feel like nobody is taking his place.

I just don’t think West Ham, I’m going to be brutally honest, have started well at all,” he told West Ham Zone.

“Every second ball we’ve never got, they’ve been a yard off it. It’s strange because I know David will have them fit. So it’s what’s gone on? They need to bring in some faces. So there’s a lot not right at West Ham at the moment.

“Good players yes, but I think they need something. They definitely need, listen, they need to bring in a left-back.

Because Cresswell, although he’s sometimes stepped up to the mark he’s going back to, he’s not getting pushed. Nobody is taking his place. Whether he likes it or not, subconsciously he’ll be saying ‘I’m in the team anyway’.”

The Hammers have re-entered talks for Emerson after the deal initially collapsed over personal terms and agent requests, while Kostic has since joined Juventus after initially deciding to remain in Germany for Champions League football.

Vladimir Coufal started at left-back in the midweek win over Viborg for which Cresswell was suspended, but the 32-year-old is likely to return to the starting lineup for Sunday’s crunch game against Brighton.
