Pundit says West Ham United must use London to their advantage in transfer talks

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham must use the fact they are based in London to entice players to join them this summer, according to pundit Frank McAvennie.

The Hammers are expecting a busy summer transfer window and have been linked with a host of players as David Moyes looks to bolster his squad ahead of the new season, to build on what was seen as a good season by many.

But because of that they are competing with a lot of top clubs for players they want to sign, and McAvennie believes the club must use the fact they’re based in London as a way to convince players to join them.

“I don’t know what the figure is and I don’t know much about him, but one thing for sure over the summer is there will be a lot of names round about,” he told West Ham Zone.

“Now I get that West Ham can’t compete with the big boys, but they’ve got something that a lot of the big boys haven’t got and that’s London.

“They’ve got to use that because people, lets just say, the bosses which will be the wives they would – no disrespect to the Liverpool’s and that – but if they’re good enough to go Liverpool then they’re not in the bracket of West Ham yet.

“But just under that, a lot of people want to move to London with their family and that’s a great pulling point for West Ham if they can’t match the big guns.

“Sometimes it’s nothing to do with money, well they’ll get a lot of money at West Ham anyway, but they want to enjoy their life as well. That might be the pulling point for [West Ham].”

These days it’s often about what you can offer the player off the pitch as much as what you can offer them on it, and the Hammers do have London as a big plus point in their favour.

London is one of those cities that people want to live in and they would earn a lot of money being at the London Stadium too, even if it isn’t quite what they could earn elsewhere.

At this point the club must look to use every advantage they possibly can, including their location.
