David Sullivan exit strategy mooted at West Ham United as chief set for multi-million-pound loss
West Ham United are unlikely to be affected by David Sullivan’s multi-million loss away from the London Stadium, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Reports suggest the Hammers’ largest shareholder is set to lose £10million on his London mansion as he looks to sell it for £65million having spent £75million on the property [Bloomberg, 3 October].
Although Plumley understands why supporters would be intrigued by the developments, he doesn’t think it will have any impact on the Hammers after a Sullivan exit strategy was previously mooted at the London Stadium.
“I think supporters will always look at things connected to their club and that’s natural,” Plumley exclusively told West Ham Zone.
“If you see something connected to a person in the ownership group and there’s a financial element running through it, you’re bound to have a look.
“I don’t think it has any direct bearing on the situation at the London Stadium and we know of course with the new investment that’s come into West Ham over the last few years that we were kind of thinking there might be an exit strategy for Sullivan in due course.
Will David Sullivan exit West Ham United amid London Stadium speculation?
“People will always talk about it, that’s for sure. That’s just the way we approach football finance at the minute and the people that are owning the clubs.
“But it doesn’t seem to have any direct bearing on the club and actually, what may happen at that club in the future is more probably linked to the new investment coming in than the current group that has had it for a long time.”

Although Sullivan has not always been the most popular figure in East London, he did back Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui heavily in the summer transfer window and deserves credit for doing so.
While fans will be concerned that this eight-figure loss could impact transfer plans at the London Stadium, Plumley had previously told West Ham Zone the Irons were unlikely to spend heavily in January after a busy summer in East London.
