David Moyes developments could sway Julen Lopetegui sack decision at West Ham United

West Ham United’s decision to not extend David Moyes’ contract could sway their their stance on sacking Julen Lopetegui, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

The Hammers boss is understood to be under early pressure at the London Stadium, with reports suggesting the Irons’ next three games will be crucial to the former Real Madrid manager’s future [Florian Plettenberg, 26 October].

While Lopetegui isn’t expected to be sacked imminently, Plumley believes parting ways with the 58-year-old would be easier for the Irons as they aren’t having to pay Moyes a settlement or any compensation.

“That’s the bigger picture isn’t it,” Plumley exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“It’s relative to the bigger picture of the club. If you’ve got into the habit of sacking managers on a fairly short-term basis and you’re paying off compensation fees every time, that does really have an impact on the bottom line.

“But if you’ve gone through a stage where you’ve had a fairly steady manager as well as West Ham have had and that contract has come to an end with no fee needed to be settled, then maybe that might sway a decision.

Why did West Ham sack David Moyes at the London Stadium?

“You do have to look at the wider factors, for sure because it’s not just as easy as taking a single decision in isolation.

“Of course, you’ve then got to look to who are you bringing in next and how much does it cost to get them as well.

“There’s a cost of sacking, but there’s a cost of re-hiring as well in the current market.”

Lopetegui’s side are next in action against Manchester United at the London Stadium on Sunday (27 October) with games against Nottingham Forest and Everton to follow before the November international break.

The Irons manager will know that results have to improve sooner rather than later to ensure that he doesn’t receive his marching orders, but the games certainly don’t get any easier over the coming weeks.

Hopefully, he will manage to find a way to turn things around before it is too late.
