‘Significant possibility’ David Moyes sacked at West Ham United on one condition – Jacob Steinberg

There is a “significant possibility” David Moyes is sacked as manager if West Ham start the season badly, according to Jacob Steinberg.

Writing on their official website (5 August), The Guardian journalist reports that claims the Scot could face the sack imminently following a bust up with director of football Tim Steidten are wide of the mark.

However having been on the brink before winning the Europa Conference League, there is a “significant possibility” that Moyes gets the axe if the Hammers start their Premier League campaign poorly.

“Suggestions that Moyes could quit have been played down by insiders,” he wrote.

“Sources at the club want Moyes and Steidten to have a productive working relationship and believe that the mood will improve once new players arrive.

“However, it is understood that a managerial change is a significant possibility if West Ham start the season badly.”

Sensible

Most Hammers fans would agree that Moyes is lucky to still be in a job at the London Stadium this season despite the fact he won a European trophy in his last game as boss.

Moyes has been playing awful football for a while now and after spending over £185m last year, the club only just avoided relegation from the top flight in what was a disaster of a domestic campaign.

Obviously winning the cup gives him credit in the bank, but he had used up all his previous credit last year and now he is on thin ice with this recent bust-up with a new board appointment trying to take the club forward.

If the club start the season in the same way they did last year, then the fans will turn on him again much quicker then they did back then and the club will feel more of a need to act.

He is in the final 12 months of his deal already and despite his legacy being cemented with a trophy, not many would be too sad to see the back of him before that contract expires.
