West Ham to have summer headache as Edson Alvarez Fenerbahce update emerges

West Ham United could have a busy summer of outgoings, and one player they may not have expected to deal with was Edson Alvarez.

The Mexican international has spent this season on loan at Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, who do hold a purchase option in the move.

However, injuries have made his time in Istanbul quite stop-start, and he never really got going to impress the Turkish giants.

It had certainly looked like his future at London Stadium was over, but an update out of the player’s international camp has seemingly confirmed the outcome of that loan.

Ahead of West Ham’s transfer window, they will have quite the headache when it comes to dealing with the Mexican.

What has Mexico manager Javier Aguirre said about Edson Alvarez’ future?

Alvarez had a strong start to life at West Ham, impressing in his first season for the London side, but the second was far from what fans had become accustomed to.

In a way, it became no surprise that manager Graham Potter had looked to ship him out, as he was simply not in his plans.

However, the loan move looks to be ending at that, with no permanent move for the midfielder according to his national team manager.

Speaking about Alvarez, Mexico manager Javier Aguirre stated via Marca: “Fenerbahce will not exercise the purchase option they had, and he is focused on the World Cup.”

So, the Hammers will now likely have to find a new club for the versatile midfielder heading into next season, especially if they get relegated.

It is an unwanted headache that at the start of the season they would not have wanted to have. Alvarez staying at Fenerbahce would have made life much easier.

Could Edson Alvarez stay at West Ham?

With Alvarez, it is a case of never say never, as Nuno Espirito Santo never had the chance to manage him before he was sent out on loan.

However, if he were to stay, that would only seem plausible if the Hammers’ Premier League status remains in tact after this weekend.

Alvarez is unlikely to be tempted to stay in E20 if Championship football is on offer, with teams playing in Europe previously being in for him.

Although Alvarez could thrive spectacularly in the Championship if he takes the decision to play at the lower level.

Time will tell what happens with the Hammers star, who still maintains a contract until June 2028.
