West Ham set for cash boost as Gianluca Scamacca’s sell-on clause stands in Atalanta exit

West Ham United have a sell-on clause in Gianluca Scamacca’s contract with Atalanta, as the striker looks close to joining Roma this summer.

The Hammers signed the Italian international from Sassuolo in 2022 for a reported fee worth £35million, but the deal didn’t turn out to be the success that all parties had hoped it would be.

After scoring just eight goals in 27 matches for the Hammers, Scamacca was sold to Atalanta in 2023 for a fee of around £27m, inserting a sell-on clause for any future exit.

Now, according to Roma Press talks for the 27-year-old to join Roma are underway, with a contract already in lace until 2031.

West Ham could bank some money from Scamacca’s sale, and it will be welcomed considering what’s happened at the London Stadium since the forward left just over three years ago.

What is West Ham’s sell-on clause for Gianluca Scamacca’s sale?

The Hammers need to raise a reported £150m in player sales this summer after suffering relegation, and David Sullivan will take any small funds that he can get.

Nuno Espirito Santo looks set to stay on in the Championship, but once talks are completed, he could be given a new deal on reduced wages.

Scamacca in Serie A with Atalanta this season

Scamacca has been on fire in Italy with Atalanta this season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions, and looks set to switch to the other part of the country.

The number nine has reportedly held talks with Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini, and should he join, he will be competing in the Champions League next campaign.

West Ham hold a 10 per cent sell-on clause for anything that Scamacca is sold for, and it could see Sullivan take home an extra couple of million for the Italian, three years after his E20 exit.

How much could West Ham make from Scamacca’s sale?

When Scamacca left West Ham, he joined Atalanta in a four-year-deal, meaning his contract with the Serie A side expires in just over 12 months.

That means that this summer is the time for Atalanta to cash in, if they wish, as soon they won’t be able to get a fee and would see him leave for free instead.

Scamacca’s Transfermarkt value is £21.6m, and 10 per cent of that is £2.16m.

It’s by no means a groundbreaking amount for the Hammers, but when so much spotlight will be on their finances this summer, it’s certainly a positive.
