West Ham prepare Tomas Soucek succession plan amid Youssouf Fofana links but impact irreplaceable
West Ham United will eventually need a Tomas Soucek successor, with the Czech midfielder not getting any younger.
Soucek has been key to the Hammers’ rise up in the table, which has seen them come out of the relegation zone in recent weeks.
The 31-year-old’s deal is set to expire at the end of the next season, and the Irons would do well to future proof with him still in E20.
Ahead of the summer window, various names have emerged, with Youssouf Fofana the latest midfielder linked to West Ham.
However, ahead of West Ham’s summer window, seeking a Soucek replacement will not just be about the qualities he offers but also the moments he provides.

How Tomas Soucek’s impact goes beyond his attributes
Soucek had an eventful performance against Everton as he scored and made a goal-line clearance.
The Czech international has become a fan favourite throughout his spell in the Premier League due to his hard work and how impactful he has been for West Ham.
| Tomas Soucek for West Ham this season | Total |
| Points per game when starting | 1.15 |
| Points per game when not starting | 0.81 |
During his time in East London, the midfielder as contributed to 60 goals for West Ham (47 goals and 13 assists) but it is his mere presence that provides the Hammers a boost.
As stated by The Athletic, during a run throughout December and January where Soucek was dropped for six games, the Irons only picked up two points.
However, since reintegrating back into the side, the Hammers have won 22 points from 14 matches.
The Hammers will face an impasse this summer, however. Soucek has been linked away, and with his contract entering its final year after this season, cashing in will be tempting.

West Ham have reportedly identified Fofana as a potential signing, with the French World Cup finalist on their radar a few seasons ago as well.
West Ham fans must temper Tomas Soucek replacement expectations
So while Fofana may play a similar role, coming into Nuno Espirito Santo’s setup will require a lot more than just his attributes.
He would have to provide obvious impact, just as Soucek has done for the East Londoners.

It remains hard to see how Fofana could replicate what Soucek brings to the Irons, and ultimately, that is what the Frenchman will be judged on.
Soucek has become such an enigmatic figure at London Stadium that without him, there would be a noticeable void missing.
