West Ham owe Airidas Golambeckis an apology after rebuffing gem’s January offers

West Ham United decided to keep Airidas Golambeckis at the club in January.

Aged just 18, Golambeckis has gained a glowing reputation after a string of impressive performances at Rush Green, and he looks ready to take the next step in his career.

The wonderkid was entrusted with the Under-21s captaincy at 17, following in the footsteps of Mark Noble and Declan Rice, and has regularly taken part in first-team training.

He signed a new long-term contract to commit his future to the London Stadium until 2029, but the club have not yet rewarded his show of faith with a senior debut.

Even worse, they may now be regretting turning down loan moves for Golambeckis.

Why did West Ham reject loan bids?

The centre-back was named on Nuno Espirito Santo‘s first-team bench on four occasions in December and January, hinting that his maiden bow was imminent.

Instead, he slipped back following the loan arrival of Axel Disasi and has not had a look in since. As a result, the Hammers’ rush to rebuff approaches in the winter looks hasty.

Airidas Golambeckis’ 25-26 statistics

According to The Athletic, Golambeckis had interest from a host of Football League clubs last summer and as recently as January, but West Ham were reluctant to let him leave.

They made the call to use the wonderkid as squad depth, but this misstep could well have stunted his development and denied him the chance to impress elsewhere.

While Golambeckis is highly rated behind the scenes at West Ham, they did him a disservice by keeping him around in a reserve role. He is better than that.

What’s next for Airidas Golambeckis?

The teenager has plenty of time to ease his way into the senior crop. Rushing him could have a negative effect, so perhaps erring on the side of caution is the right approach.

Regardless, West Ham will not be able to truly judge his ability until he chances his arm at a higher level, perhaps in non-league or a first loan spell in the Football League.

Sporting director Mark Noble, speaking after Golambeckis’ new deal, admitted he has “real high hopes” for the gem, adding: “We would like to see him in our first-team squad soon.

“I really believe he’s got a chance.”

Golambeckis may be able to prove his credentials during the Hammers’ pre-season tour over the summer, and if they are relegated, he’s almost certain to get his big shot.

Either way, he is playing for his boyhood club and won’t disappoint when his chance comes.
