West Ham United will be fearful of losing Mateus Fernandes when the summer window opens.

The 21-year-old was the Hammers’ big-money signing at the start of the season, and he has proven to be worth every penny.

A £38million fee with £4m in add-ons was agreed, and it’s safe to say he’s been the best player in claret and blue this campaign.

That has seen him feature 31 times already for the Irons and will be keen to avoid a second consecutive relegation from the Premier League.

Fernandes could find himself moving away from West Ham if his side does face relegation, and we have now assessed what we know about his contract in E20.

What is Mateus Fernandes’ West Ham contract situation?

The ex-Sporting CP youngster took to football in East London like a duck to water and immediately caught the imagination of supporters.

He has proven to be a regular source of creativity, goal threat and industry for the Hammers in a massively difficult season.

That has seen Nuno Espirito Santo back his fellow countryman to lead his midfield, while the men alongside him seem to change regularly.

His performances have certainly caught the eye away from the London Stadium, but the Irons hold all the cards moving into the summer.

Fernandes put pen to paper on a five-year contract as his switch from Southampton to the capital was confirmed.

He will earn a reported £60,000 per week throughout that five-year deal, equating to a yearly salary in the region of £3.1m.

Even with those terms in place, a summer move could still be on the cards with Fernandes attracting transfer interest away from West Ham already.

Who could sign Fernandes in the summer?

There will be no shortage of interest for the Portuguese ace in the summer, especially if the Irons are relegated to the Championship.

He has performed at a much higher station this campaign and truly deserves better than what has been on show at the London Stadium at times.

That has piqued interest from all the big sides in the Premier League, with names like Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United all mentioned.

A move would come with a sizable transfer fee and could potentially hand the Hammers a large profit on their £34m summer investment.

The ideal situation would see West Ham stay up and keep hold of Fernandes, but that may not be possible if a drop to the Championship is confirmed.
