West Ham doors open for Haji Wright transfer after Callum Wilson exit update
West Ham may turn their attention to Coventry City’s Haji Wright following the news that Callum Wilson could leave the London Stadium this summer.
Wilson was only handed a new deal recently, which has left some Hammers fans confused as to why he may leave.
The veteran number nine had found his touch in front of goal, which led to his deal at the London Stadium being extended, but after a dip in form, his exit looks likely once more.
There were multiple clubs interested in signing Wilson this winter, and there’s a good chance that Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side can pick up a fee for him in a couple of months.
West Ham have had their eyes on Wright in the past, and with Wilson growing closer to an E20 departure, the Coventry star could be back on Nuno’s radar.

Haji Wright can fulfil West Ham’s needs and more
West Ham were credited with interest in Wright throughout the winter window, but with Coventry sitting pretty on top of the Championship, it was always going to be hard to secure his signature.
Clubs are much more reluctant to sell players in the January transfer window, and strikers usually cost teams a premium in this period, too.
| Area of game | Stats |
| Matches (starts) | 33 (27) |
| Goals | 16 |
| xG | 16.1 |
| Duels won | 38.8% |
| Dribble success | 32.6% |
| Average FotMob rating | 6.99 |
Wright has netted 16 goals this season in the Championship and is well on track to be named the division’s top goal-scorer for the season.
West Ham have Pablo and Taty Castellanos in their ranks already, but there are early fears that the pair might not up to Premier League standard.
There’s always the worry that the Hammers could still get relegated, but survival would surely mean another push for Coventry’s Wright.
The Sky Blues look favourites for promotion, and if they do reach the promised land, they’ll have to go about their business smartly, as a big-money offer for the American could look tempting.
Wright vs Taty Castellanos stat comparison
While Wilson looks bound for an exit, the Hammers may still have confidence that their current striking options will serve them well for the future.
However, Pablo looks somewhat like an unpolished number nine, and could do with a loan move away next campaign. Castellanos, on the other hand, has shown glimpses of good and bad.
| Player | Shots | On target per 90 | Goals | xG |
| Taty Castellanos | 22 | 0.83 | 2 | 2.59 |
| Haji Wright | 86 | 1.36 | 16 | 16.1 |
Castellanos has shown signs that he lacks composure in front of the goal, something Wright does not.
The Argentine is already underperforming his expected goals return in the Premier League, while Wright is essentially even in the same department, with 14 more goals.
Castellanos did join midway through the campaign, of course, and the gap to the top-flight is huge. But, Wright could be a smart move to make, especially if Wilson does go.
