Niclas Fullkrug: West Ham would be fools to rip up contract amid £100m sales target

Niclas Fullkrug has been a terrible signing for West Ham United, both on the pitch and financially for the Hammers.

In 2024, a £27million transfer was agreed, and the striker will remain on the books until 2028. A contract that has been a major mistake.

The German was shipped out on loan during the winter window, with Nuno Espirito Santo deeming him surplus to requirements.

Fullkrug, however, failed to impress again after joining AC Milan, with the 33-year-old now set to return to London Stadium.

Ahead of West Ham’s summer window, plenty of decisions will have to be made around who they sell and who they keep, with Fullkrug sure to pop up in talks.

Why West Ham should not rip up Nicolas Fullkrug contract

Fullkrug is set to return to West Ham following his loan at AC Milan after he failed to convince the Italian giants to keep him.

In the end, the Milan side missed out on securing Champions League football, a failure for the Rossoneri.

Fullkrug certainly did not help them get over the line, netting just once in 20 appearances.

Now, according to BILD, West Ham are considering just completely ripping up Fullkrug’s contract and allowing him to leave on a free.

While it would save the Irons the money on his wages, they could do with the funds received from a sale for the former Borussia Dortmund man.

It has been reported that as much as £100m could be needed to ease any financial concerns for West Ham, which may require the Hammers to let some of their top stars leave.

Even with the slightest of cash injections from selling Fullkrug, it could allow the East London club a little more breathing room.

Where could Nicolas Fullkrug go?

A return to Germany is the most likely move for Fullkrug. Wolfsburg were mentioned as a potential destination, but following their demotion to the Bundesliga 2, they may be unable to afford them.

Werder Bremen are now the more likely candidate, with BILD name-dropping the Northern Germany club.

MLS clubs are also circling, as well as Italian and Spanish clubs, but the Hammers’ outcast is eyeing a return to his home country.

Time will tell where Fullkrug turns up, but it is safe to say it was a disastrous transfer to West Ham for all parties.
