Krisztian Hegyi contract latest as West Ham talent speaks out on London Stadium future

Krisztian Hegyi has spoken about his hopes for his future at West Ham United.

The Hungarian goalkeeper was signed by the Hammers in 2019 from Szombathelyi Haladas, but the 23-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for the East London side.

He has spent time with Stevenage, FC Den Bosch, Motherwell and Debrecen on loan since moving to E20 seven years ago.

The stopper is confident that he will eventually get his West Ham breakthrough in the coming years, despite his progress being halted by injury issues.

What is his contract situation at West Ham?

West Ham have took an interest in extending their youth players recently and they announced that Hegyi signed a contract extension in June 2024, which would keep him with the club for a further three years.

That contract is set to expire in June 2027, meaning that he has just over one year left at the London Stadium.

There has been no indications of a new deal at the minute, but the Hammers have the choice to extend it by another year, which could take it to summer 2028 instead.

What has Hegyi said about his future?

Hegyi still believes that he can make it with the Irons, that is clear from an admission that he made after he linked up with MTK Budapest.

The keeper joined the Hungarian outfit in January and reaffirmed his commitment to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in an 11 March interview, saying: “I firmly believe that I will get an opportunity in England one day. I still have a one-year contract and an option.

“The most important thing is to get back to the level I was at before my injury.

“The national team was also an important aspect in my decision to return to Hungary. I am more visible.

“The NB I is a first-class championship where young people are playing more and more.”

How has Hegyi performed recently?

Hegyi has featured eight times for MTK in the Hungarian top-flight this season, with 17 goals conceded and one clean sheet so far, not exactly the most encouraging form.

In the last campaign, he played just twice for Motherwell, with both appearances coming in the Scottish Cup, before making seven appearances for Debrecen, before injury ended his campaign.

The lack of football will be a concern for the young goalkeeper, and it seems like he faces a huge mountain to earn a place in the senior side with the Hammers.

His commitment is admirable, but it would be a huge long shot, if he was to make it with the Premier League side at this point, given how he has not yet broken into the team, despite being in East London for such a long time.
