Konstantinos Mavropanos has come up trumps for West Ham United in the last few weeks, but his future is uncertain.

The Greek defender has been attracting interest due to his strong performances at London Stadium, with Borussia Dortmund touted as a potential destination.

Nuno Espirito Santo will not want to lose the defender, especially if the Irons stay in the Premier League.

However, West Ham may already be preparing for that possibility with the latest transfer links emerging for Moustapha Mbow.

A West Ham transfer for Mbow makes plenty of sense if the deal is made with the Senegalese defender replacing Mavropanos.

Why West Ham may view Moustapha Mbow as a Konstantinos Mavropanos replacement

West Ham have reportedly sent an offer to Mbow’s camp, so the interest appears to be quite serious.

Centre-back is certainly a position needing filled with uncertainty around Axel Disasi’s permanent future and Max Kilman’s struggles in E20.

One of the biggest comparisons that can be made is which side of defence the pair typically play on.

Both are primarily right-sided centre-backs. Additionally, the pair are similarly successful when it comes to winning duels, making Mbow even more of a like for like swap.

The Paris FC defender has a 64 per cent win rate compared to Mavropanos’ 65 per cent as per Sofascore.

The African centre-back is also a volume defender, making five clearances, 1.7 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game.

In the same respect, Mavropanos is almost identical, racking up 6.2 clearances per game, 1.3 tackles and 1.5 interceptions.

On the surface, the two have similar profiles.

What is the latest on Konstantinos Mavropanos’ future?

As it stands, the last details we have on Mavropanos is that the defender had been won over by a pitch by Borussia Dortmund.

If the Hammers were to be relegated, it would almost certainly signal the end of his spell in East London. However, interest in Mbow suggests that West Ham may not be confident about the Greek remaining if they survive.

West Ham are wise to prepare for the future, even if they do not want to sell the 28-year-old. Replacing him with a younger and identical profile, though, could be the smartest option.

Time will tell what happens with West Ham in the near future as focus remains on finishing this season strongly.
