Jonathan David would only inflate West Ham’s goalscoring issue based on Juventus form
Jonathan David has had a wasteful season in front of goal for Juventus, amid reports that West Ham United could reignite their interest in the long-term target this summer.
According to a report from Italian outlet Tuttosport, David could be available for £22million this summer, with Juventus said to be open to a sale.
The London Stadium has been mooted as a possible landing spot for the 26-year-old striker, who only joined the Serie A giants last summer.
His contract expired with French outfit Lille after five years there, and the Turin-based side snapped his signature up on a free transfer as such.
But, an underwhelming debut campaign in Italy could see him moved on from after just 12 months, and West Ham could potentially have the Canadian international on their transfer shortlist.

How has Jonathan David performed for Juventus this season?
West Ham hold a long-standing interest in David, with reports linking him to the Premier League and the Hammers for many years now.
However, no such transfer has ever materialised for him, instead opting to enjoy a superb five-year stint with Lille, establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s best forwards.
| David’s Lille career stats | Goals/Assists |
| 2024-25 | 16/5 |
| 2023-24 | 19/4 |
| 2022-23 | 24/4 |
| 2021-22 | 15/0 |
| 2020-21 | 13/2 |
109 goals scored in 232 appearances in all competitions for Lille, David looked to have been a highly shrewd acquisition on a free transfer by Juventus last summer.
Unfortunately though, he’s netted just five times in 29 Serie A games this term, and as such, has endured a disappointing debut campaign at the Allianz Stadium.
It’s not just his base goal contribution numbers that tell a concerning story either, as when peeling back the curtain to peer at his underlying stats, they paint an even clearer picture of his struggles in Turin.
As per Sofascore, David has scored only five times from an expected goals (xG) of 8.24 in Serie A, with 12 big chances missed and a goal conversion of just 14 per cent.
He’s averaged 0.2 goals per game and just 0.5 shots on target per game this season, as well as recording a dribble success rate of a mere 26 per cent.
David’s duel-winning stats are also a red flag in terms of being able to handle the physical demands of the Premier League, as he’s won just 35 per cent of his total duels, with only a 27 per cent win rate in the air.
So, whilst his goalscoring numbers at Lille were excellent, both his above and below ground stats from his debut season with Juventus this season are not where he, nor anyone expected them to be.
West Ham can’t afford more transfer misses on strikers
West Ham have lacked the presence of a true out-and-out goalscoring striker for a number of years now, and that’s been a big reason as to why the team haven’t kicked on.
Considerable money was thrown at both Taty Castellanos and Pablo in January to try and fix this, but the jury remains firmly out on those two with regards to their goalscoring ability at Premier League level.
It’s so crucial that West Ham find their centre-forward of the future soon, as it’s not sustainable for them financially to keep throwing money on strikers that aren’t delivering the goods.
So, whilst David has top pedigree in this department from his time in France, so far with Juventus, the numbers would suggest he’d only add to the Hammers’ problem in attack, rather than solving it.
