Freddie Potts’ West Ham contract examined amid FA Cup struggles
Freddie Potts endured an afternoon to forget in West Ham United‘s FA Cup penalty shootout loss to Leeds United.
The Rush Green graduate was named in the starting line-up for the London Stadium clash, but he could not make the required impact.
The 22-year-old was hooked at half-time by Nuno Espirito Santo, replaced by Tomas Soucek, who improved the Hammers once he came on.
Nuno clearly rates the young midfielder, but he may be hesitant to start him in important games going forward after his showing on 6 April.
Potts is highly-rated at West Ham, but his future may not be as simple as it once seemed.

What is Potts’ contract situation at West Ham?
Potts has been at West Ham since the age of six, so he has a long association with the Irons.
That link is set to continue until summer 2029 at the very earliest, as he signed an extension in March 2025.

He emphasises the West Ham way, and supporters would love to see him kick on and become a first-team regular as a result.
| Potts’ stats vs Leeds | |
| Pass accuracy | 73% |
| Passes into final third | 3 |
| Accurate long balls | 33% |
| Defensive actions | 5 |
| Total duels won | 2/4 (50%) |
What are the possible options for Potts?
The future for Potts depends on how the manager feels about him, if he likes him, he may well stick around and play regularly.
If Nuno decides that he is not ready for senior football on a consistent basis, he may be loaned out to the Championship to improve.
That worked well last season, when he shone at Portsmouth, helping the Fratton Park side to Championship survival.
It may well be the best option, as his performance in the FA Cup exit was below the level required to help in the relegation scrap.
How has Potts performed this season?
Potts has featured 24 times this season for a total of 1,429 minutes, with 22 of those under the Portuguese boss.
In those games, he has recorded four shots, 13 key passes, and two big chances created, per Sofascore, which are not bad figures at all.
He has shown confidence with the ball with an 83.6 per cent pass accuracy and an expected assist tally of 1.06.
Defensively, he has made 30 tackles, 17 interceptions, and four blocks, showing a willingness to help his side when required.
He has a bright future, if he can convince Nuno that he can be a starting option.
