Finlay Herrick destined to become West Ham No 1 as his debut verdict speaks volumes

Finlay Herrick enjoyed a West Ham United debut to remember despite finding himself on the losing end against Leeds United in the FA Cup on Sunday evening.

The 20-year-old replaced the injured Alphonse Areola between the sticks for the final knockings of extra-time in the quarter-final tie, which then went to penalties.

The young stopper had previously been named on Nuno Espirito Santo‘s first-team bench on four occasions, and also impressed during his loan stint at Boreham Wood.

It was no surprise, then, that he made an immediate impact on his maiden bow at the London Stadium, saving Joel Piroe’s spot-kick before the Hammers brutally crashed out.

Herrick will no doubt go on to have a bright future at West Ham, and his no-holds-barred comments in the wake of his big opportunity prove he has the mentality required to succeed.

What did Finlay Herrick say after his debut?

The England Under-20 international was made to be patient for his senior debut, having joined West Ham’s academy aged just six before working his way up the ladder.

He looked set to steal the show after superbly denying Piroe from 12 yards, but he was ultimately usurped by his opposite number Lucas Perri, who saved two penalties.

Herrick was unable to keep out any of Leeds’ other three efforts during the shootout, and post-match, he was quick to admit that he could have done better.

“I’ll be critically harsh on myself and say that maybe one of them I should have done slightly better with,” he told West Ham’s club website. “But saving the first one, it was euphoric.

“It was unbelievable.”

Herrick’s words prove that he has a wise head on young shoulders, but he would do well to remember that he has already exceeded expectations. Truly, the sky is the limit.

That winning mentality makes him perfectly suited to Nuno’s project, regardless of whether West Ham are relegated or not. Now, he will just need to bide his time.

What’s next for Herrick?

Gary Lineker took note of Herrick’s celebration after he saved from Piroe, and the stopper looked at ease between the posts during his brief cameo in East London.

Scrutiny has rightly been placed on Nuno’s goalkeeping options this season, with Areola criticised for high-profile errors before being ousted by Mads Hermansen.

While Hermansen has impressed upon his return to the starting XI, having successfully shaken off a poor start at the club, next season’s No 1 has surely not yet been decided.

That has seemingly kept the door ajar for Herrick, and promisingly, Nuno has hinted that there could be a guaranteed path to first-team contention for the wonderkid.

“He is a young goalkeeper with talent,” said Nuno. “We have a project to try and help him to become what we expect from a good goalkeeper that can help us.”
